Olive Garden Breadsticks

My hubby and I just celebrated our 2nd anniversary. I can’t believe time has flown by so fast. Life hasn’t gone how either of us expected it would. All of our friends are graduated and we are still slowly trekking toward ours. We took time off to work, we moved to a new city and now we are moving back. We have learnt a lot about ourselves and I somehow fall more in love with him everyday. I don’t know how that is possible because my heart feels so full. Last year my hubby planned a wonderful anniversary celebration which included renting out an old farmhouse museum which we had to ourselves and our favourite food from our favourite restaurant: Olive Garden. This year it was much more simple as we are in the middle of moving, but I still wanted to do something special. I made a delicious Olive Garden inspired meal with Deep Fried Lasagna, Breadsticks, Caesar Salad and for dessert Chocolate Caramel Cupcakes. The meal was a huge hit, and my hubby and I had a lovely evening in, relaxing and reveling in our wonderful 2 years together and the many years to come.

Olive Garden Breadsticks

A copycat recipe of my favourite breadsticks from Olive Garden.

Servings: 12
  • 1 cup + 2 Tbsp warm water
  • 1 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 2 Tbsp sugar divided
  • 3 - 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 Tbsp vegetable oil
Garlic butter topping
  • 2 Tbsp margarine or butter
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  1. In a measuring cup combine warm water, yeast and 1 tsp of sugar. Let the yeast sit out and swell for about 10 minutes.

  2. In the bowl of a stand mixer add the yeast mixture, 1 tbsp and 2 tsp sugar, 1 1/2 cups flour, salt and vegetable oil. Use the paddle attachment. After combined switch to a dough hook.

  3. Add the remaining flour and knead the dough for 7 minutes until it pulls away from the sides and is smooth.

  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a towel or plastic wrap. Allow to rise for 1- 1 1/2 hours.

  5. Once doubled in size split evenly into 12 pieces. Roll each piece into a rope about 9in. Place on greased baking sheet. Put 6 per sheet as they grow in size. Cover with towel or plastic again to allow to rise for another hour.

  6. Preheat oven to 425 and bake breadsticks for 10-12 minutes. Spray with non-stick spray to get golden brown colour.

  7. When the breadsticks are removed from the oven combine butter ingredients and brush on top of the breadsticks.

    Serve warm.
