Red Velvet Truffles

20161119_222344.jpgI tried this recipe for the first time last year and it quickly became a must-have for the Christmas Treats Collection. I love red velvet cake. My hubby and I’s wedding cake was red velvet and it was the best red velvet cake I have ever had. I found this recipe at DessertforTwo here. I doubled the recipe so that I would get more yummy truffles to eat. These truffles are fun to decorate with different sprinkles or drizzle with chocolate. Last year I did experiment with dunking these truffles in white chocolate or milk chocolate. The white chocolate won by a land slide.



  • 2/3 cup and 2 tablespoons flour
  • 4 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 4 Tbsp buttermilk
  • 2 egg whites
  • red food colouring
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp white vinegar
  • 6 oz softened cream cheese
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • white chocolate
  • Christmas sprinkles


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt into small bowl.
  3. Using a stand mixture beat together canola oil, sugar, buttermilk, egg whites, food colouring, vanilla and vinegar. (Use enough food colouring until the colour red is satisfactory).
  4. Slowly add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Once combined pour into cake pan that is sprayed with non-stick spray.
  5. Bake cake for 20-22 minutes until a skewer poked in the middle comes out cleanly.
  6. Once baking is finished cool completely.
  7. Once cooled break cake into pieces and add to food processor. Also add the softened cream cheese and powdered sugar. Pulse together until combined. Roll mixture into balls and chill.
  8. While balls are chilling melt chocolate in double boiler.
  9. Allow the chocolate to cool and then dunk the balls in the chocolate using forks allowing the extra chocolate to drip back into the bowl. Place the chocolate covered truffles onto a baking sheet covered in parchment paper.
  10. Sprinkle with festive sprinkles and put into the fridge until the chocolate sets.
  11. Once the chocolate sets store in large ziploc bags or containers. I find they are best stored in the fridge.
