Abundant Hot Chocolate

So this weekend was quite an adventure. There was a giant wind storm in Vancouver BC and we were caught in the middle of it. Over 200,000 people were left without power due to the damage done by the storm; my hubby and I were two of those people. We were without power from 11:30am Saturday to 8:30pm Sunday. We ran out of hot water Sunday morning, but my genius husband who is studying engineering, engineered a way for us to cook. He lit a bunch of tea light candles and arranged them to make an “element” of sorts. He put two ramekins over turned beside on either side of the element so that we could rest a pan or pot above the flames (see pic 1 below). This is how we cooked this weekend.


I had decided to make some delicious hot chocolate from scratch for my inspired recipe for Abundance (see book review here). I decided to make hot chocolate for a couple reasons. First, it is hot chocolate… YUM… Second, Marie Antoinette brings up her fascination with the painting Chocolate depicting her dear friend the Princesse de Lamballe and her family. This recipe is very rich. It isn’t quite drinking chocolate but It is meant to be sipped in small amounts.



  • 1-1/2 cups melted milk chocolate (or whichever kind you prefer)
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • Whipped cream to top
  • Cocoa powder to top



  1. Slowly heat up 2 cups of milk in a sauce pan, stirring occasionally.
  2. Melt chocolate, either melt it in a heat proof bowl over a pot of simmering water or you can do what I did and use a fondue set and candles)
  3. Once the chocolate is smooth add to the warmed milk. Whisk until smooth.
  4. Add the cinnamon, salt and vanilla and stir to incorporate evenly.
  5. Once the hot chocolate has reached the desired temperature take off the heat and transfer hot chocolate to serving mugs. I put the hot chocolate in a mini jug/gravy boat to easily pour into glasses.
  6. Top hot chocolate with whipped cream and a sprinkling of cocoa powder or marshmallows. For a holiday treat you could finish by adding candy cane bits on top.
